Carrying on the Journey

It has been a while since I last wrote an entry in my blog.

Has my commitment changed? Not one bit! But one thing I do realize is that commitment is about BEING AND DOING.

The past weeks have been so excitingly busy for me. There had been a lot of DOING – taking strides at work on major initiatives we have been working on for some time now.

But the greatest surprise came when I have been recognized for the “BEING” as well. On my birthday month, I received one of the best gifts of my life. I have been considered as one of Asia’s Top Sustainability Superwomen by CSR Works!

This gift inspires me to continue on the journey, as I have MILLION TONS STILL TO LEARN! But it is good to reflect once in a while. And mid-way my sustainable development life assignment – big or small, I have gathered some lessons along the way while I carry on learning through the rest of the sustainability journey.

1. CALLING AND FAITH

I remember when I first started out on my journey more than 20 years ago, I had no idea what first steps to take. I just knew in my heart what I was called to do – SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY.

Nobody understood it then. The concept was very new. I had to be true to what I knew I should do. And oh how it did take a LOT OF FAITH! But little by little, the path became clear one baby step at a time.

2. COURAGE AND STRENGTH

The beginning took a lot of courage on my part to start a journey that was not quite clear then. It was not long enough for me to realize that mustering enough courage to take the leap of faith was simply the beginning. Having the strength to carry on every day was the battle I constantly had to win.

3. HARD WORK AND PERSEVERANCE

There are a million steps needed before reaching the final step to the finish line. And it is the perseverance through the ups and downs of the millions of steps that makes reaching the finish line sweeter.

4. “WE” IS THE WAY

The beauty about being human is that we were made to be with others. God constantly gives us the gift of people – to help us, to inspire us, to teach us, to sharpen us, to strengthen us, to challenge us, to test us, to improve us and to uplift us.

Though I was clear with what I was called to do, God made it very clear that it was about OTHERS. “WE” IS THE REASON OF THE JOURNEY.

5. SERVICE AND SIGNIFICANCE

Lastly, the deepest lesson that is carved in my heart is that SERVICE LEADS TO SIGNIFICANCE.

It is when we help OTHERS BECOME THE BEST VERSIONS OF THEMSELVES that makes us THE BEST VERSION OF US. And ultimately, THE BEST VERSION OF THE WORLD AROUND US.

It has been a very long time since I took the first step in my journey towards a life devoted to sustainability and sustainable development. Here is a THROWBACK photo of me during my post graduate studies at the University of Santiago de Compostela.

Back then, I never thought that SUSTAINABILITY will BE AS SIGNIFICANT AS IT IS IN TODAY’S WORLD.

As my birthday month closes, I cannot say THANK YOU ENOUGH for all the blessings that God continues to bestow upon me to carry on this journey. What makes it extra special is that God has blessed me the opportunity to live out my purpose every day as a member of the SM corporate family!

Now… back to the DOING! I LOVE THE DOING!

Thank you for mentioning me and Albert in your entry! Serving the scholars indeed calls for a lot of DOING but the fulfillment is OVER THE TOP. The Lord has been gracious in blessing me with the work i have.

May the Lord continue to bless the works of our hands!
