Innovator for Hope

The first time I met him, he was overflowing with such positive energy, full of optimism as he shared about their project, The Yellow Boat.

I would like to think of myself not as an innovator but as a HOPE Builder. I believe the world faces many challenges and problems today and it’s our job to create hope by inventing or designing better products, services or systems.

Jay jaboneta

Jay Jaboneta is one of the co-founders of the Yellow Boat project, which branched off from their Facebook group called Zamboanga Funds for Little Kids. They started out just thinking of ways to help the children in Barangay Talon Talon, who would swim just to go to school.

This project is what made Jay realize that innovation is not really about creating something new, rather taking what is already there and applying it elsewhere. And what is the key metric to make sure that it is working? – the positive social impact it brings.

Leading Innovations at NEXUS

Today, Jay continues to bring his innovative approach as he drives NEXUS Innovation Labs in achieving its mission to contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive society founded on equity and justice. He was invited by De La Salle Lipa President Br. Dante Amisola FSC to foster multidisciplinary collaborations within the campus and to promote social innovation and entrepreneurship within the community.

“At NEXUS Innovation Labs, we consciously use these new technologies like Virtual Reality, 3D Printers, and the like, to address the world’s biggest problems – the UN SDGs. We believe in adopting new technologies for social good. Take the case of 3D Printing for example, in the US and other parts of Europe, they are now able to 3D print houses as part of a socialized housing program. We hope to contribute in this area. We envision all these new tools can be harnessed to make a difference in the lives of others. And we believe, the way to close the gap, is to ensure all schools become breeding grounds for social innovators.”

While the country exhibits a widening gap between advancing technology and lagging on basic social services, Jay strongly believes that technology can empower people to create solutions that help build a more just and equitable society, particularly in the area of HEELS – health, education, environment, livelihood and shelter.

Creating Inroads Towards a Digital Economy

“I believe the Philippines is at the right place to leapfrog many countries in terms of adopting more sustainable practices. We have been growing consistently at 6% for the last 10 years (COVID-19 aside). And we are at a demographic sweet spot where a majority of our population are still young. There are many challenges that we are facing but there is no scarcity of talent in the Philippines.”

ROLE OF NEXUS IN LEADING US TO A DIGITAL ECONOMY

We want to be the Hub for Innovation, Social Entrepreneurship and Collaboration in the CALABARZON region if not the entire Philippines. We are always open to collaborating with different organizations to produce social innovators and social enterprises in the country. We are consciously looking for partners who can help us build capacity in creating and developing solutions that address the UN SDGs with the end goal of inspiring and supporting students/student teams to use entrepreneurship to create solutions to real world problems.

Jay Jaboneta – On his dreams for Nexus

The world needs dreamers and the world needs doers. But above all, the world needs dreamers who do.

Sarah Ban Breathnach

For Jay, purposeful innovation equates to 1% innovation and 99% perspiration. He believes that to raise Filipino innovators, we need (1) a national program on strengthening the Filipino spirit, having a mindset that states “We can do it,” and (2) for our schools to train Filipinos to become better negotiators.
